CHRISTIAN FAITH AND RELIGION
PAUL TILLICH'S COMMITMENT

In the current confusing Brazilian context, marked by polarization and intolerances of all sorts, including the use of God's name, a theological discernment of religious experience is important. This article proposes a preliminary and fundamental reflection on the distinction and close relation between faith and religion, in view of any future discernment. In this tread, the author proposes to rethink this fundamental relationship starting from Paul Tillich, in his debate with Karl Barth. The two theologians have in common the need to overcome a concept of religion, while drawing different consequences for faith. They thus reveal divergences in anthropological assumptions and in the modes of doing theology. At the limit of this controversy, this article focuses on the need to discern authentic faith within religious experiences, for most ambiguous they may seem.
