METHODISTS AND THE STRATEGIES OF PROTESTANT PROPAGANDA IN BRAZIL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 19TH CENTURY

This article seeks to present the first manifestations of the Protestant presence in the 1930s, together with the political environment that led to the arrival of these groups of Catholic immigrants in Brazil. Brazilian Protestantism still needs to be researched, investigated and valued, as it has emerged as a phenomenon that has produced significant changes in the religious landscape of the immense Brazilian countryside. In these brief lines of research, we set out to analyse the presence and work of the important missionaries of the Methodist tradition: Justin Spaulding and Daniel Parish Kidder, and the nature of their work in Brazilian lands, investigating what their actions were and how they impacted their contexts, and what resistance they faced, as well as what aspects were favourable to their missionary work in the country. We believe that with this article we have made a contribution to researchers in this field in Brazil.
