REREADING NICAEA IN THE SPIRAL OF OUR TRADITIONS

In 2025, the Council of Nicaea will be 1,700 years old. The timing of this celebration, which is important for all ecumenical efforts of the Christian churches, justifies and invites a new reading and appropriation of the canons of that first great ecumenical synod of Christianity to motivate dialogue and the rapprochement of the various sectors of Christianity with their historical and community roots. This study presents a new translation, by formal equivalence, into Portuguese, of the twenty canons of the Council of Nicaea, originally written in Greek. Together with this translation, an updated discussion (midrash) of each of them will be presented, exploring the ecumenical, synodal and spiritual dimensions of each canon, mediated by a reading from the current ecumenical Protestant perspective. The expected result, already obtained through the process of engagement with the twenty canons, is the rediscovery of the current relevance and relevance of these foundational canons for all of Christianity. Those synodal decisions and opinions of the 4th Century still have relevance in the 21st Century, both in their original formulation and in a reaction to their proposals.
