Religion and violence: past and present alliances

What is the connection between religion and violence? Is religion—all true religion—not a source of peace, and peace alone? Yet, being a source of peace is only part of the truth. Let us state honestly from the outset: religion also serves as a resource for legitimizing violence, including through semantic shifts involving terms like "sacrifice," "just war," and so forth. It is not that religion is always a source that legitimizes violence; rather, the opposite is true: violence requires religion—of whatever kind—to acquire a sacred character.
