Abstract

The Chapter 47 of the Book of Isaiah portrays God as the direct agent of the downfall and humiliation of Babylon, having sexual violence as the backdrop in wartime contexts and the image of God as the perpetrator of such violence. This representation is, to some extent, legitimized insofar as, throughout the entire book, Babylon ‒ personified as a woman‒ is depicted as a dominating power, an enemy of the chosen people of Israel, and the agent of exile, thus rendering its destruction seemingly “naturalized”. This article first undertakes an exegetical and theological analysis of Isaiah 47:1–15 in order to investigate the extent to which the text configures God as a perpetrator of violence. It argues that, although the passage must be situated within its historical context and interpreted according to a symbolic-theological framework, it must nevertheless be critically evaluated for its potential to legitimize violence against women and for promoting a representation of God that proclaims and endorses such violent acts, an interpretation which, if uncritically received, may lead to a sacralization of violence against women.
